Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted he never wanted Craig Bellamy to leave Anfield and is pleased the striker has returned for a second spell.

The 32-year-old Wales international signed a two-year deal on deadline day having come to an agreement with Manchester City over the final year of his contract. Bellamy spent just 12 months with the Reds, having originally been signed by Rafael Benitez, before leaving in 2007.

“I’m delighted that Craig is back – I didn’t want him to leave in the first place,” Gerrard said. “That pace and the fiery character he’s got will help us in our push for success this season” who wear liverpool football shirt no.39.

He added: “When he was here before he was popular and one of the hardest working in training. He was always in the gym getting himself in good shape.

“What people need to realise is that Craig is a top professional. He works really hard day in, day out.

“He’s very knowledgeable about the game and I know even though he’s slightly older than me he will still want to learn and do well here.

“I’m sure he will be desperate to play for Kenny. He will have watched Liverpool from the outside like me in recent months and seen a lot of positive things.

“He will be excited to come back and we’re glad to have him back.”

World Football – Senegal reach finals, Libya win

Posted on 4th September 2011 in Sports

Senegal clinched a place at next year’s African Cup of Nations finals thanks to striker Moussa Sow’s double in a 2-0 win over Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday.

Last season’s top scorer in France’s Ligue 1 showcased his growing impact on African football shirt by netting either side of half-time in Dakar to clinch top spot for Senegal in Group E.

They join Botswana, Burkina Faso and the Ivory Coast in securing places at the 16-team finals, along with co-hosts Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Burkina Faso qualified earlier without kicking a ball as Namibia beat Gambia 1-0 in Windhoek on the penultimate weekend of the preliminaries.

The achievements of Burkina Faso and Senegal were overshadowed by an emotional victory for Libya (pictured), playing with a new team and under a new flag as they kept their Cup of Nations hopes alive. A 1-0 win over Mozambique behind closed doors in Cairo took Libya to the top of Group C.

Holders Egypt are officially out of the competition after losing 2-1 away to Sierra Leone but they were already resigned to elimination and sent an U23 side to Freetown.

Cameroon hit five goals past Mauritius and Ivory Coast, without the injured Didier Drogba but inspired by Gervinho, won by the same 5-0 scoreline in Rwanda.

Mali, with Barcelona’s Seydou Keita back in their football shirt team, edged closer to qualification with a 3-0 home win over the Cape Verde Islands in Bamako while Tunisia resurrected their hopes by drawing 0-0 in Malawi.

Sow’s two goals against the Congolese took his tally in the preliminaries to four and emphasised the important role the former French junior international has assumed in the Senegal side over the last year.

The Lille player forms part of a potent strike force that has delivered 14 goals in the qualifiers, a total bettered only by the Ivorians who are in a much less combative group.

Rabiyah Lafi is the toast of war-torn Libya after a 30th minute goal ensured a vital three points for their makeshift football shirt team in neutral Egypt.

More places in the finals could be decided on Sunday with 10 more qualifying games scheduled.

Tricky Rooney leads England to easy win

Posted on 3rd September 2011 in Sports

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney continued his brilliant start to the season by netting twice as England strolled to a 3-0 win over goal-shy Bulgaria in a one-sided Euro 2012 Group G qualifier on Friday.

The goals all came in the first period with Rooney finding the net midway through the half and just before the break after defender Gary Cahill had put the visitors ahead with his first international strike.

“It was very important to win here,” England coach Fabio Capello told reporters. “We played a really good game and prepared really well.”

England, playing in unfamiliar dark blue shirts and light blue shorts, went in front when Bolton Wanderers defender Cahill converted a pass from Gareth Barry after 13 minutes.

Cahill was a target for Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur before the transfer window closed earlier this week.

“It’s been a crazy week, a difficult week mentally,” he explained. “But once the window shut I knew I was staying so I’ll get my head down and work hard for Bolton and my country.”

Rooney, who has been on fire for Manchester United this season, made it 2-0 with a firm header from Stewart Downing’s right-wing cross.

The unmarked Rooney then tapped the ball into an empty net from close range following a fine solo run by Theo Walcott and a precise right-wing centre from Ashley Young in first-half stoppage time.

Capello’s side top the group with 14 points from six games, three ahead of Montenegro who lost 2-1 to Wales on Friday. Bulgaria remain fourth with five points.

England’s victory could have been even more emphatic as they dominated throughout.

LAMPARD LEFT OUT

Downing headed against the post from a delightful cross by Young and home keeper Nikolay Mihaylov did well to parry Scott Parker’s stunning drive.

Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, who had 86 caps at the start of the day, was left out by England in a competitive match for the first time since 2007 and the decision was vindicated as Parker and Barry shone in midfield.

Lampard eventually came on for Barry with 10 minutes left.

“I decided on Barry instead because I saw the last game he played and he was in good form,” added Capello.

“Frank is always a really important player for the national team. He is getting better but he is not on top form at this moment.”

Walcott escaped the offside trap but could not find the fourth goal as his 18-metre shot went wide with only Mihaylov to beat.

Defeat virtually knocked Bulgaria out of the competition as Lothar Matthaeus’s team failed to score in a third consecutive home game in the group.

“We all saw the difference between the two teams,” said former Germany playmaker Matthaeus.

“We tried to create some scoring opportunities but England played very well.”

Cole joins Lille on loan from Liverpool

Posted on 31st August 2011 in Sports

Joe Cole

Midfielder Joe Cole has joined French champions Lille on a one-year loan in a bid to secure a place in England’s Euro 2012 squad and play in the Champions League, the Ligue 1 club said on Wednesday.

“Lille, Liverpool and Joe Cole have reached an agreement over the loan of the England forward for one season,” Lille said on their website (www.losc.fr).

Cole, 29, failed to make an impact at Liverpool last season after joining the Merseyside club from Chelsea.

Cole, who has 56 caps, has not played for England since last year’s World Cup.

“Of course I’d like to be back with England. It is one of my goals,” Cole was quoted as saying on the club’s website.

“The most important thing is to have the possibility to play in the Champions League.”

Liverpool failed to qualify for this season’s Champions League while Lille were drawn with Trabzonspor, CSKA Moscow and Inter Milan in Group B.

Arsenal’s Traore moves to QPR

Posted on 30th August 2011 in Sports

Armand Traore

Arsenal full-back Armand Traore moved across London to join Premier League rivals Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday to become the latest signing made by the top-flight newcomers.

Traore has signed a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee on the eve of the transfer window deadline and just days after being a member of the Gunners’ defence that let in eight goals during last weekend’s 8-2 humiliation by Manchester United — his lone Premier League appearance in the last 15 months.

The 21-year-old Frenchman has become the third signing since Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes took control of QPR following Joey Barton and Luke Young, who joined from top-flight rivals Newcastle and Aston Villa respectively.

Traore said the enthusiasm of Rangers manager Neil Warnock had helped persuade him to move to Loftus Road, telling QPR’s website: “When I talked to Neil Warnock he was very passionate about what I could bring to the club.

“He was very motivated about playing me week in, week out, and that’s what I need at this stage of my career.

“I’ve not been able to prove and show what I’m all about because I’ve been at two big, big clubs like Juventus and Arsenal.

“I’m looking forward to coming here and playing regular football.

“The ambition of the new owners and the calibre of players they are signing is something that really attracted me to the club.”

Warnock was delighted to add Traore to the west London side’s squad, saying: “Armand has been my number one defensive target for a while now. I’ve been speaking to Arsene (Wenger) for a couple of weeks.

“He’s a young and exciting lad who I think can only get better playing for a side like ourselves on a regular basis. He needs games and he’ll get that here.

“Nobody has seen the best of him yet, but over the next couple of years I’m confident he’ll show the quality that I clearly believe he has.

“He’ll be a great outlet for us down that left hand side.

“He’s got all the attributes you need to be a top, top defender.”

Traore joined Arsenal as a youth player from French club Monaco in 2006 and, while he featured in all major competitions for the Gunners, he made just 32 appearances in total for Arsene Wenger’s team.

The left-back had season-long loan spells with Portsmouth in 2008/09 and, last term, with Italian giants Juventus. He has represented France at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 levels.

An Arsenal statement said: “Everyone at Arsenal Football Club would like to wish Armand well for his career at Loftus Road.”

Troubled Arsenal seek Champions League boost

Posted on 24th August 2011 in Sports

Arsenal VS Udinese

Arsenal take a 1-0 lead to Italy on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League play-off against Udinese, while Bayern Munich and Lyon also look to clinch places in the group stage.

Arsene Wenger’s men overcame the departure of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, and the absence of numerous key players, to take an early lead in the first-leg thanks to Theo Walcott.

However, Udinese were unlucky not to nab an away goal and will be hopeful of turning the tie around at home, especially as the English outfit’s fragile confidence took another hit at the weekend when they went down 2-0 at home to Liverpool.

That result meant the Gunners have now failed to score in their first two league games of a season for the first time in 42 years, while their hopes of stopping Udinese from scoring have been hit by a back injury to Laurent Koscielny.

After the Liverpool reverse, a downbeat Wenger decribed the Udinese return as being “of big importance,” but it is diffuclt to know where the Gunners would go next if they failed to qualify for the group stages.

Robin van Persie and Samir Nasri are available again after suspension, and Nasri could play unless his mooted transfer to Manchester City is completed before Wednesday.

Udinese do not begin their domestic campaign until next weekend, so Francesco Guidolin’s side have been able to focus all their energy on beating Arsenal and returning to the Champions League group stages for the first time since 2005-06.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich — who dream of going all the way to a final which will be held in their own Allianz Arena — have more than one foot in the group stages after beating FC Zurich 2-0 in last week’s first leg.

The Bavarians head to Switzerland further boosted by a superb performance in beating Hamburg 5-0 in the Bundesliga at the weekend.

Lyon prepared for the second leg of their tie with Rubin Kazan with an underwhelming 1-1 draw at Brest, but Remi Garde’s side impressed in their 3-1 win over the Russians last Tuesday.

Rubin, who lie 10 points behind Russian league leaders CSKA Moscow with just nine games to go, have considerable selection problems just now, although new Paraguayan signing Nelson Valdez could feature.

In Spain, 2006 semi-finalists Villarreal must overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against unfancied Odense.

Juan Carlos Garrido’s side, who had no game at the weekend after a strike put paid to the opening round of games in La Liga, should still have enough quality to advance.

“We are all aware of the situation because our season depends in large part on winning this tie,” said Villarreal’s Argentine striker Marco Ruben ahead of the clash at El Madrigal.

“In fact, it’s probably a good thing that we didn’t play at the weekend because we have been able to focus all our attention on the Champions League, which is fundamental to our season.”

Two-time former European Cup winners Benfica are well-placed to overcome the challenge of Twente Enschede after drawing 2-2 in the first leg in the Netherlands.

Belgian champions Genk must turn around a 2-1 first-leg deficit against the Israelis of Maccabi Haifa without coach Frank Vercauteren, who has left to take charge of Al-Jazira in the United Arab Emirates.

Viktoria Plzen and Dinamo Zagreb should go through after big first-leg wins, but APOEL versus Wisla Krakow and Sturm Graz’s tie against BATE Borisov are finely poised.

Arsenal’s Song banned for Barton stamp

Posted on 17th August 2011 in Sports

Alex Song

Arsenal midfielder Alex Song was hit with a three-match ban on Wednesday after admitting a charge of violent conduct following the Gunners’ stormy clash with Newcastle last weekend.

Song, 23, landed in hot water after video footage appeared to show him stamping on Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton.

Barton was later at the centre of an incident which led to the dismissal of Arsenal striker Gervinho, who has also been banned for three games for violent conduct.

Both Arsenal and Newcastle have been charged with failing to control their players following the ugly melee which culminated with Gervinho’s dismissal.

Villas-Boas braced for stern Stoke debut

Posted on 14th August 2011 in Sports

Andre Villas-Boas

Andre Villas-Boas will begin the daunting task of satisfying Chelsea’s notoriously demanding owner Roman Abramovich when he takes his team to face Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.

Villas-Boas, 33, has been fast-tracked into one of the highest profile jobs in European football on the back of an outstanding season of success at FC Porto.

The Portuguese will be expected to succeed where predecessor Carlo Ancelotti failed last season – and deliver success to Stamford Bridge.

Ancelotti was sacked 12 months after leading the club to its first ever league and FA Cup double, a clear reminder to Villas-Boas – Chelsea’s seventh manager in seven years – that mediocrity will not be tolerated at the club.

The task facing him is to close the gap on Manchester United in the Premier League and to that end a trip to Stoke is hardly the gentlest introduction for a manager anxious to find his feet in the division.

Villas-Boas worked at Chelsea under predecessor Jose Mourinho and has inevitably attracted comparisons with his predecessor – comparisons he rejects.

But he will have to oversee a similarly successful spell in charge to that enjoyed by the ‘special one’ if he is to remain in his position for the foreseeable future.

Villas-Boas said: “We’ll do everything in our power to win the title back. We’ve had a good pre-season and everyone is feeling excited to be coming back to competitive games. Hopefully this first challenge is important.”

Fernando Torres is fit after suffering concussion this week but defender David Luiz has been ruled out.

Striker Jon Walters has warned Chelsea to expect another bruising encounter at the Britannia Stadium, insisting the pressure is all on new manager Villas-Boas.

Walters has constantly defied the doubters since his arrival at Stoke last summer and his excellent goal against Chelsea last season was another reminder that at £2.75m he has been one of Tony Pulis’s most shrewd signing.

Stoke are still yet to beat Chelsea since promotion to the Premier League but Walters is convinced the Potters can give Villas-Boas a harsh introduction to this unforgiving division.

He said: “The pressure is on them. They are trying to take the league from Manchester United, they have brought in a new manager and, with the players they have, they should be up there.

“But we gave them a good game when we played them here last time and we will be looking to do the same again.

“We were playing against the best players, but we saw we could stand up to them, put them on the back foot and put the pressure on.

“It was end to end, both sides hit the woodwork and either could have won it. We came off the pitch on a bit of a downer that we had only drawn.

“Sunday’s match is another to look forward to and hopefully we can reproduce the same sort of game.”

Rory Delap will face a late fitness test on a hamstring tweak, while new signing Matthew Upson is not yet match-fit. Ricardo Fuller (Achilles), Danny Higginbotham (knee) and Mamady Sidibe (Achilles) are long-term casualties.

Anzhi lure Zhirkov from Chelsea

Posted on 5th August 2011 in Sports

Chelsea

Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala have signed left winger Yury Zhirkov from English Premier League giants Chelsea on a four-year transfer, Russian daily Sovietsky Sport reported Friday.

Anzhi has so far refused to make any comment on days of rumours that one of Russia’s top stars is returning to his homeland. But media reports claim Anzhi have payed Chelsea £13.2 million (15.2 million euros) for the 27-year-old Russian international.

Sports daily Sovietsky Sport said that Zhirkov has already signed the deal, while his wife Yulia is now seeking apartments in Moscow as the couple prepare to return home.

Zhirkov will reportedly receive a 5.5 million euro annual salary in Makhachkala to become the Russian league’s top earner.

Two years ago, Chelsea payed £18 million for Zhirkov to his previous club, CSKA Moscow.

However, Zhirkov failed to become an integral player for the London side. In the last two years he played 49 matches for Chelsea, scoring only one goal.

Anzhi are based in Makhachkala — the capital of Caucasus republic of Dagestan which is one of Russia’s most dangerous and unstable regions.

But in the last months they have showed huge ambition under new owner, oil and metals magnate Suleiman Kerimov, who purchased the club in January.

Earlier this year Anzhi bolstered their line-up by signing the veteran Brazilian star Roberto Carlos on a two-and-a-half year deal, one of the biggest names ever to play in the Russian league.

The 38-year-old 2002 World Cup winner is now the league’s top earner with a reported annual fee of five million euros payed to him by Kerimov.

Anzhi are currently sharing fourth spot in the league with 30 points from 18 matches.

Kerimov, who is also a Russian senator, showed his intent to raise Anzhi’s profile by signing another Brazilian international midfielder Jucilei da Silva from Carlos’ former club Corinthians for 11 million euros.

Kerimov is also set to construct new football stadium in the Caspian Sea city of Makhachkala, which is currently more known for militant attacks than the achievements of its football clubs.

For security reasons, the players live and train in the Moscow region but fly into Makhachlaka for home matches.
